So, Redbull graciously invited me to this year’s bass camp italy, which is basically a mini 3 day version of the academy proper, with lectures, exclusive shows, studio setups and free drinks. It was an amazing experience, the class was packed with incredibly talented producers and singers and i felt like i was going to get exposed as a fraud every time i opened my mouth or played a note.

#3 in the acclaimed and beloved Street Fighter Beat Tape series, Mean Green focuses on our favorite Brazilian Beast Blanka, so expect lots of Bossa samples, some murky amazon deepwater jungle funk, tribal footwork and bouncy Bossa-thon.

Backstep Roll and Song for Jimmy are classic sample flips with added boom bap, though the groove is a lot more stilted and jarring, Lightning Cannonball has kind of a moombathon tempo, or should i say bossathon? Don’t know, not really good with genres and labels.

River Run and Rock Crusher are deeper, plodding amazon jungle jams, with a lot of bass and general sense of heaviness, while Mean Green and Electric Thunder are the party cuts, with busy syncopated drum patterns, footwork style.

The package is rounded out by three excellent remixes by Lupid, Brotto and K.Relly, so yeah, this is the most packed release in the series yet, and i’m really proud of it, head over to bandcamp, download it and let me know what you think of it.

This took a long time, sorry, but when i started this series i honestly didn’t think it would get to this, yes, the first two tapes got downloaded 2000 times already, and i got a lot of messages, donations and collabo propositions.

So well what i am trying to say is that i kinda felt the pressure for this.

And honestly I hate Blanka, he’s so hyper and always hopping around and busting out some tricks. I really hate fighting the dude. That fucking bite move, or that cheap electric shock thing, nightmares am i right?

But yeah, about the music, that’s the main thing of course.

Foreplays had a very good reaction from both audience and critics, so it deserved a proper remixes release.
The result is this HWR021: seven remixes by seven music mates from all over Italy: Digi G’Alessio is part of the Overknight crew and maybe the most important italian name in the wonky dubstep scene. His last release is a great split with UXO, another Foreplays remixer and creator of the blog Queenspectra. Desanimaux, part of Homework and great visionary remixer. Furtherset is just 17 and already played at Dancity Festival and Club to Club. Railster from Udine, part of Reddarmy and creator of the Beat.it compilation. Grillo is a well known name at HWR since he’s the author of “Fireworks” released on our label. Last but not least Mstk: part of the crew Alive Lab, maybe the most beautiful news in the electronic scene of Bologna.
Everything ends with “Starz are coming in”, an unreleased Apes on Tapes’ original.

BEAT.IT is a project focussing on an exciting musical movement.
The compilation we put together features tracks from a number of Italian underground producers, with musical genres ranging from funk to abstract, and including some of our most interesting and contemporary experimental sounds.
