As it happened last year, after making a handful of tracks i find myself with a lot of scrapped material: some of that, after a bit of time and polish, turn out surprisingly good. This new collection covers a lot more sonical ground, with some dubstep / uk garage vibes and even a little crazy jaunt into 4/4 territory.

And, of course, a definite Edmond Honda vibe.

I’ve been toying around with Native Kontrol’s LPC live and i’ve got to say it adds to the novation launchpad all the functionality i wish it had and even more. The launchpad is great, don’t get me wrong, as a performance tool i feel it’s almost perfect, but with the LPC script it becomes something else, and i’ve been able to craft entire beats without touching the mouse or even watching the screen.

But enough rambling, i’ve put together a little kit of hard messed up drum sounds to try the 16 pads mode, and i’ve decided to post it here to download, so feel free to use it to make some crazy beat or whatever.

As a bonus, here’s a short little video of me demoing the sounds. Next week i’ll upload the second part of it, when i actually stop fucking around and lay down a beat.

I’ve been sampling some vinyl lately, and got all sorts of, let’s say ‘collateral’ audio material, like needle drops, hums, various record noises and of course a lot of dusty and scratchy background noise loops. I’ve saved most of this stuff and i am using it more and more. A subtle hint of noise can really hint a whole world, it can provide atmosphere even if it ends up buried in the mix and barely audible.

These loops create a barely there organic noise floor that really helps different elements gel together and masks the pure digital silence you get when nothing plays in your arrangement.

But enough with words already, let’s get straight to the good stuff. Included in the zip file are 25 various loops and throwaway turntable noises, lovely sampled by yours truly.

I’ve been working on a lot of new things recently and built up a stock of tracks and ideas that sat there gathering up dust, which is not good at all. So i’ve decided to turn it into a street fighter themed little piece of work. I cut samples from the videogames and funny youtube videos and mixed them pretty much on the fly with the beats and synths in Live. The results aren’t bad, there’s a lot of noodling and screwing around, sure, definitely background music, but it thrums along nicely.

And it has a definite Ken Masters vibe, so beware.

Unstable Compound takes Double Rare Tender firmly into dubstep territory, and i really dig the grunge treatment applied to the vocal samples, sounds grittier and neater than ever. Costa and Fulgeance go hard at it turning Be Aware and Brown Box into legit space funk bangers, much more danceable than the originals. Last but not least Railster nails a great rework of Can Never Be with sweet synths and a rolling drumbeat.

Couldn’t be happier with the results, really, this whole project makes me incredibly proud.

As one of Homework’s best albums ever, “Fireworks” deserved a bomb remixes release, meant to underline and deconstruct the original one.
FIREWORKS REMIXES adds a wider look to the downbeat scene already visited by Grillo.
Everything in our plans just happened as we involved an important international name like the parisian Fulgeance; a well known italian one like (Costa) and a rising talent from Bologna: Unstable Compound.
Fireworks is revisited but not destroyed: Fulgeance gives a further demonstration of is open minded music with a pure down-funk remix of Brown Box. (Costa) brings some dusty synth shots to the battle remixing Be Aware. Unstable Compound reveals for the first time his new obscure, filtered dubstep side, playing with Double Rare Tender. In the end, Grillo himself liked everything a lot and decided to put his second vision of Big City Lights, which looks more like a brand new track than a remix.

A bit of old school, a lot of visionary abstract instrumental hiphop, some dubstep references, a bunch of sweet melodic taste mixed with dusty sounds: this is the receipt of a great downbeat album like “Fireworks” and this is how Grillo kicks off his debut match with the Homework Records team!

Matteo shows how the new Italian abstract hiphop movement is active and fresh, winking to old school stuff and watching to contemporary instrumental tendencies at the same time.

“Fireworks” puts together influences by Prefuse 73′s melodic taste, powerful triumphal beat lines and a lot of attractive spoken quotes perfectly cut into the main rhythmic pattern.

All the sounds come from an old session with a vintage sp unit, but they have been somewhat processed, and while they may be now sound a little bit crispier (especially in the high end) they still retain the crunch and the grime imparted by the hardware and the infamous sample transpose technique.
