A collection of deep, bad beats inspired by the unparalleled sumo power of Edmond Honda.

As it happened last year, after making a handful of tracks i find myself with a lot of scrapped material: some of that, after a bit of time and polish, turn out surprisingly good. This new collection covers a lot more sonical ground, with some dubstep / uk garage vibes and even a little crazy jaunt into 4/4 territory.

And, of course, a definite Edmond Honda vibe.

Yeah, it’s kind of a big spoiler i guess on the theme, but the free download full release is coming next week (hopefully) so if you’re curious keep an eye on this page in the next few days1

Besides my track you can find reworks by Railster, Planet Soap, Bunny on Acid, Foolk, Matt The Good and Brotto himself, for a wide variety of different styles.

I must admit it wasn’t really easy remixing grassland, i kept fumbling and never seemed to find stuff that sticked with it. Eventually i ended up working around the main drone and letting it drive the track, so it has kind of a liquid, psychedelic kind of flow that i tried to somehow reign in with all the little fills and edits.

Brotto – Grassland (Grillo Remix) by grillo

Remixing this proved to be extremely difficult, as it always does when the original track is that good.

And this one is really incredible.

A 100 bpm funky number with an half-tempo, half steppin sparse groove that swings every which way, with Opolopo providing creamy beautiful synth licks to support Amalia’s silky smooth voice.

At first i kept sticking too close to the original and ended up scrapping a lot of ideas because they quite simply didn’t measure up. So after scratching my head a little bit i ended up going in the complete opposite direction, with a more up-tempo number with a straighter groove and loads of new synth textures, brass stabs and arpeggios.

Yeah, i know, probably the song wasn’t really well suited for this style of arrangement, but i hope i made it work somehow.

Acre is a deep dubstep/electronica producer from Manchester, UK. He has an EP due for release on Saturate Records in the coming months featuring the track ‘I Saw The Crescent’ that we featured a few months back.

He also featured on Justlikemusic’s Oscillations compilation and dropped his Fireworks LP on Homework Records at the end of 2009.

Ghosts of Fireworks are based in the South of England making hip-hop influenced electronica music. This year they have been self releasing numerous tracks and EPs from the 52 Ghosts project which I have really enjoyed. The project saw the release of a new track every Thursday and new EP every 4 weeks.

Annu is a Virginia based hip-hop producer who gained a following through the free release of his Dream Runner EP in early 2009. He further cemented his place in the beat scene with his self released debut LP Def Vibrations at the end of 2009.

I’ve been working on a lot of new things recently and built up a stock of tracks and ideas that sat there gathering up dust, which is not good at all. So i’ve decided to turn it into a street fighter themed little piece of work. I cut samples from the videogames and funny youtube videos and mixed them pretty much on the fly with the beats and synths in Live. The results aren’t bad, there’s a lot of noodling and screwing around, sure, definitely background music, but it thrums along nicely.

And it has a definite Ken Masters vibe, so beware.
